The trick then is to judge how the battle is going and figure out when you need them based on what you've seen (are people getting hurt?) and what you hear (is Prompto complaining?). Items only apply to characters that need them - Even though you can't see the HP bars, you know who has lost max HP because they're the only ones you can give an Elixir to. You'll find that it's easier to react when you have more space and ability to watch what you and the enemies are doing. Get a good feel for the flow of battle, and then just start reacting to what you see. You start watching the characters battle instead of the numbers flowing on the screen and everything becomes automatic. This is where turning off the HUD really helps. Go with the flow - SO MUCH of this game depends on timing and getting that timing from watching the enemies. Losing the ability to see health is really scary, but if you're finding things a bit too easy anyways then it might be time to take the plunge. Your buddies' chatter is one of the best clues of how well you're doing in battle, so get a feel for the voice lines and the animations and how they indicate how well you're doing. You need a feel for the flow of a battle and have a good understanding of the mechanics. Learn the game first and don't switch until you're a bit overlevelled - I played about 30 hours before I switched off the HUD.
